Just last week, Kevin Smith proved he’d lost his goddamn mind with the trailer for Yoga Hosers. But, if going off his rocker leads to potentials projects such as this, then baby, keep taking the crazy pills.
On a recent episode of his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, the New Jersey auteur confessed that he’d been approach by MGM to bring The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension to television.
Let that sink in: A bunch of suits want to adapt a 1984 flop-turned-cult-classic into a television series. If that’s not further proof that Hollywood has lost their goddamn minds, then we’re already living in Psychoville, and Smith’s the mayor.
As he’s wont to do, Smith digressed at great lengths on the opportunity, crediting his recent directing stint for CW’s The Flash as opening all sorts of “weird doors.” One such door was Banzai.
Diehard fans of the original shouldn’t get too excited. Peter Weller, John Lithgow, and Ellen Barkin aren’t likely to return as Smith says the first season would be a totally new adaptation of the original film.
However, he did suggest that the following season could pull from the proposed sequel teased in the original film’s final credits: Buckaroo Banzai Against The World Crime League. That’s funny.
For those in the dark, Buckaroo Banzai was a zany sci-fi adventure musical that followed Weller as the titular hero, an adventurer/surgeon/rock musician whose band, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, fight alien invaders.
Yeah, the Eighties were fun. Anyways, listen to the whole podcast below and revisit the cult classic’s original trailer shortly after.
