Kristen Stewart spars with life and death in the Personal Shopper trailer – watch

on May 17, 2016, 2:13pm

One of the bigger stories of the ongoing Cannes Film Festival so far was the unusually icy reception with which Olivier Assayas’ latest film, Personal Shopper, was met; the film was booed after its premiere. Debuting in competition for the Palme D’or (Cannes’ top prize), the thriller follows Kristen Stewart as the titular aide to the rich and/or famous, who’s concurrently struggling with the death of a family member who may or may not be a continued presence in her life.

It’s not completely implausible that an audience might turn on an Assayas film, with the director’s lyrical style of filmmaking certainly being something of an acquired taste. But it’s also far from the first of his films to appear at one part of the festival or another, which begs the question of exactly why the director’s latest would so irk the Cannes audience. In any case, it looks like an interesting experiment in genre for the filmmaker.

IFC Films has picked up Personal Shopper for distribution, although the film’s current release date is unknown. In the meantime, check out the film’s international trailer up top.
