Trekkies can find solace in the second trailer for Star Trek Beyond. For one, there’s zero “Sabotage”. But also, it appears that Fast and Furious director Justin Lin actually might “get” how to make a proper Star Trek film.
“My dad joined Star Fleet because he believed in it,” Chris Pine’s Captain James Kirk states, admitting: “I joined on a dare.” However, Karl Urban’s Dr. Leonard McCoy insists, “You joined to see if you can live up to him.”
It’s almost a sly commentary on the reboot series itself. When JJ Abrams pushed the reset button back in 2009, there was reason to believe the franchise could be fun, fresh, and exciting again. Then 2013’s Into Darkness happened…
This second trailer doesn’t exactly quell those fears, but Idris Elba does look pretty nasty as Krall and it appears as if we’ll be trotting around to various new locales. Check out the trailer above and try to look past Lin’s hyperbolic action.
Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22nd.
