Steve Gunn shares video for easy-going single “Ancient Jules” — watch

Americana music has always embraced a wandering vibe, one that was built to soundtrack the open spirit. Steve Gunn’s latest single from his forthcoming Matador Records debut, Eyes on the Lines, couldn’t capture those ethos any better. Entitled “Ancient Jules”, the track invites you to unlatch yourself and go with the flow of life, with Gunn singing, “Take your time, ease up, look around, and waste the day.” Even the instrumentation begs you to let loose, as James Elkington interlaces his countermelodies with Gunn’s own guitar work like wind wrestling a thicket of tall grass, lines twisting around one another in breezy beauty.

The Claes Nordwall-directed video for the song further accentuates the idea of letting life carry you instead of the other way around. Gunn takes a motorcycle trip through the British countryside, only to have his BMW bike breakdown on a field-lined road. Thankfully, prolific English folk musician Michael Chapman happens to be passing buy in his pickup. The two head back to Chapman’s home, where they drink wine, explore the elder artist’s impressive record and memorabilia collection, and jam out. Check out the clip above.

Eyes on the Lines is out on June 3rd via Matador. Gunn has added a few new dates to his tour supporting the release, and you can find his complete itinerary below.
