Plenty of pop punk kids learn the hard way that growing up ain’t easy, but few have proven as willing or as able to sort their shit out on record as Philadelphia’s Modern Baseball. Following 2014’s breakout LP You’re Gonna Miss It All and two years of near-constant touring, the band finally seems ready to focus on something larger than iPhones, Instagram accounts, and all the other white noise that defines post-adolescent life. They closed the book on their last chapter by releasing a short documentary about their past, and now they’ve officially started a new one with the release of Holy Ghost.

For their third studio album, Modern Baseball went all Lennon and McCartney (well, late-period Lennon and McCartney) by dividing songwriting duties neatly in half. The record kicks off with six songs from Jake Ewald and closes with five from Brendan Lukens, but Holy Ghost doesn’t suffer from its split personality. Each of these songwriters has his own Jekyll and Hyde contained within himself, which is how a ripper like “Wedding Singer” can end up on the same side as the slow, contemplative title track.

With most songs clocking in at under two minutes, Holy Ghost is a short record. It’s also an emotionally exhausting one, filled with all the highs and lows of growing up and finding one’s place in the world. The album comes out May 13th via Run for Cover Records, but you can stream it in its entirety The Bandcamp Blog right now.
