The Avalanches share teaser trailer pointing to release of new song this Friday

on May 23, 2016, 9:15pm

The Avalanches are the all-time kings of the tease. Since releasing their debut (and only) record, Since I Left You, in 2000, the Australian have been working on a follow-up, but it never seems to be ready for release. It was on our most anticipated in 2010, 2012, 2013and 2014, and it’s still not out. (We left it off the last two years because fool us four times, shame on us, but fool us five…) However, this year, shit’s finally getting real.

The electronic outfit have confirmed their first live performances in 15 years, including spots at Primavera Sound, Field Day, and Splendour in the Grass. Now, they’ve released a mysterious new teaser clip that appears to hint at collaborators for their ever-forthcoming sophomore album.

Designed to look like a trailer for a documentary called Since They Left Us: Whatever Happened to the Avalanches?, the clip recounts the story of The Avalanches throughout most of the aughts and ’10s. Then guests begin to appear, like Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux, Ariel Pink, and Danny Brown. All three of those artists have been connected to the new album in the past, and the latter two speak of their work with the band in this new clip. Kirin J. Callinan (formerly of Mercy Arms) also appears, as does one Father John Misty. When asked what it was like working with The Avalanches, the man aka Josh Tillman responds, “Um, What are the Avalanches?”

So is this actually a documentary about the new record? Is it simply a preview of said record’s collaborators? A copyright remark on the band’s website does say “Since They Left Us the Movie.” We’ll all of course keep waiting to find out, but the words near the end of the trailer don’t offer much in terms of a timeline. “Coming soon,” they read. “Hopefully.”

Unwilling to sit patiently, however, one Redditor has dug up a tantalizing possibility. Apparently, if you Shazam the song that starts at about 1:20 in the trailer, you get a result of “The Wizord of Iz” by BRAINZ. Interestingly enough, a band Brainz is found on Noise 11’s list of upcoming releases for May 27th, with a song called “Frank Sinatra” coming from Universal Australia. UA originally released Since I Left You, and Danny Brown said in a multiple interviews that his record with the band was called — wait for it — “Frank Sinatra”. Brown has also said that he recorded two tracks with the band, the other of which he proclaimed will “change the world.” Listen closely to the vocalized “Yeah!” and “Uh!” during what Shazam dubs “The Wizord of Iz” — that sure does sound like a familiar Detroit rapper.

Might this reallyfinally be the week? Or are the kings of teasing just up to their old tricks again. While we collectively hold our breath, watch the video above.
