The Avalanches tease new song “Subways” via hotline

on May 27, 2016, 10:45am

Earlier this week, The Avalanches released a teaser trailer for Since They Left Us: Whatever Happened to the Avalanches?, a forthcoming documentary that offers insight into the band’s long-awaited follow-up to 2000’s Since I Left YouNow, as one Redditor has pointed out (via Stereogum), new posters promoting the film have been popping up around the city of London, and they contain a very special clue.

At the bottom of these posters is the phone number +44 800 098 8938. When called, a snippet of a brand new song called “Subways” can be heard. Update: A US number has been revealed for stateside fans, (855) 953-3597.

If you want a listen, be prepared to rack up those long distance charges.

There’s no telling when this song or documentary is due to come out, or whether the whole thing is just a promotional gimmick for something bigger like, hey, an actual album (we’ve been fooled before in 2010, 2012, 2013and 2014, after all). Hints suggest that collaborations with Father John Misty and Ariel Pink, among others, could be in the works and that a new song titled “Frank Sinatra” featuring Danny Brown could drop as soon as later today. Stay tuned.

What we do know for sure is that The Avalanches have confirmed their first live performances in 15 years, including spots at Primavera Sound, Field Day, and Splendour in the Grass.
