It was a matter of circumstance that led The Melvins to title their upcoming album Basses Loaded. The fact is, the band hasn’t featured a consistent bass player since 2006, so when it came time to record their next effort, they had to reach out to their friends to fill in. That led to six different musicians playing bass on the new record — hence, Basses Loaded.

When it came time to record their cover of The Beatles’ “I Want to Tell You”, Buzz Osborne and the boys knew just who to call. They tapped Redd Kross founder and Steve McDonald to slap the strings on the track, which was fitting considering his huge Beatles fandom. “We knew he would know it very well and would do a great job,” King Buzzo told The Wall Street Journal. In fact, everyone does a great job on the Revolver cover, adding a thin layer of scuzz to the psychedelic pop track. It stomps a little harder, crunches a bit louder, yet somehow remains fairly faithful to George Harrison’s original.

Check it out below.

Basses Loaded is due out June 3rd on Ipecac Recordings. They’ll be touring Europe immediately around the release, but they’ve just announced a new round of US dates for August. Check out their full itinerary below, and buy tickets beginning this Friday, May 13th.
