Yasiin Bey (better known as Mos Def) announced earlier this year that he planned on retiring from entertainment. The decision came shortly after he was arrested in South Africa for illegally living there for almost three years and attempting to leave the country without proper documentation. Still, Bey promised one more record by the end of the year and has continued to work on new music while stuck in South Africa.
Today, he’s shared one such new track, “N.A.W.”. Credited to Dec 99th, the track is produced by Ferrari Shepard and prominently features Bey’s vocals. The title stands for “needs and want,” a phrase that’s repeated throughout the chorus as the rapper sings, “Fuck what you like/ Needs and wants/ You got needs and wants… I hope you got what you need/ And that you need what you want.” Take a listen below.
Bey was also recently forced to cancel a series of dates in Scandinavia, as he revealed in a voice message posted to his Soundcloud account. Though it’s the second time he’s had to postpone the shows in recent months, he did promise to reschedule them for the fall. He also said he was in high spirits while dealing with his legal situation and thanked his fans for their support. Listen to the message below.
