Natasha Khan has already previewed her forthcoming album as Bat for Lashes, The Bride, with a trio of tracks and a killer performance at April’s Coachella. With the July 1st release date creeping ever closer, she’s dropped another new single from the The Haunted Man follow-up, a somberly foreboding track called “Joe’s Dream”.
The story arch of The Bride follows a woman whose fiancé dies in a car crash on the day of their wedding, and “Joe’s Dream” seems to be a premonition. Over a heartbeat thump and watery guitars reminiscent of Twin Peaks, Khan attempts to comfort her lover (Joe, one assumes) after a terrible nightmare in which he sees, “angels at his bedroom door/ And a body on a checkered floor.” In that moment of tenderness, they both realize they’re falling even deeper in love with each other, but something dreadful hangs over the entire scene. “And now I can see just what my heart can hold,” Khan sings as the chorus ends. “But what does it mean/ The bad things that I’ve seen?”
