Here’s your first look at Tom Hanks as hero Captain “Sully” Sullenberger

We’ve heard of Captain Phillips, but Captain Sully?

As previously reported, Tom Hanks will star as the heroic airline captain who famously saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew after successfully landing his troubled plane on New York’s Hudson River in 2009. Um, you might have heard a little thing called, “The Miracle on the Hudson”?

That entire story, which was exhaustively detailed on every major news outlet for months on end, is naturally the subject of Clint Eastwood’s latest biopic, Sully. It’s not out until September 9th, but thanks to People, we now have a first look at the Academy Award winner as the titular pilot (see above) and the film’s poster (see below).

His co-star Aaron Eckhart, who plays co-pilot Jeffrey Skiles, spoke to the publication and insisted that Hanks “really embodied” and “nailed the precision” of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who regularly visited the set and, like anyone, probably bugged Hanks asking when he’d get around to Gump 2.

Historians worried about the accuracy of the age-old story will be relieved to know that Eastwood not only shot on the Hudson, but also consulted flight patterns, radio transcripts, and even used the same rescue boats. Hell, Hanks and Eckhart fiddled around with a simulator of the famed Airbus A320!

Of course, we’d expect nothing less from royalty like Hanks. Speaking of which, don’t miss out on any past, present, or future episodes of Executive Editor Adam Kivel’s podcast, Hanks for the Memories.
