There’s a long action movie tradition of the loose-cannon cop/antihero who doesn’t play by the rules, a tradition so hallowed in the genre that parodies of that tradition have become their own widely understood reference, from Last Action Hero to The Fairly Oddparents. You know who he is. His jaw is chiseled. His hair fakes a rugged appearance. He gets all the girls and kills all the bad guys. It’s more than likely that he has been asked on one or more occasions for his badge and his gun. That sort of loose cannon.
Take Jack Reacher, for example. In Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the sequel to the 2012 film that was more successful than you might recall and your dad probably loves, Tom Cruise reprises his role as the famed pulp-lit vigilante who left the military despite endless decoration to carry out justice the Jack Reacher way. This chiefly involves a lot of violent, masculine interrogation. And to the loose cannon point, just look at all the rules by which he refuses to play in the film’s first trailer alone:
— May have committed some kind of aggravated assault
— Sick jumps over huge gaps
— Abandoning his post as a national hero
— Defying federal espionage charges to seek out the truth
— Citizen’s arrest of a dubious cop with excessive force
— Threatening to rip a man’s arm off and beat him to death with it
Oh, Jack, who won’t you punch justice into? Anyway, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hits theaters on October 21st. Check out the film’s first trailer here.
