New York rockers 1-800-BAND live it up on new song “Des Moines” — listen

on June 01, 2016, 12:00pm

Take one look at their throwback official website or their yellowed one-sheet, and it’s pretty apparent that 1-800-BAND wish the world was forever stuck in a ‘70s time warp. It’s not all about the looks, however, as the New York rockers channel that era into every aspect of their music, including forthcoming album High Beams.

The 10-track effort was produced by Mitch Easter, a founding member of the seminal outfit Let’s Active and engineer/mixer for the likes of Wilco, Dinosaur Jr., and Ex Hex. Like its predecessor, 2012’s self-titled collection, it’s an amalgamation of rock and roll punch and Tom Petty-esque power pop, as filtered through 1-800-BAND’s lens. Perhaps more importantly, the album never skimps on the fun.

“Light bleeds through the dusk: You’re living in the city, skint, close to the bone, wondering if she still cares,” a press release sets the scene for the High Beams, as though it were a gritty New York film starring a leather-clad and lovelorn John Travolta. “But you’ve got your mates, your good-fitting denim, and enough for an egg sand at the donut shop.”

Feel-good spirits abound on the album’s lead single “Jackie’s Wrong”, and they show up again in full force on their newest offering, “Des Moines”. “Des Moines’ alright, we could steal a car and leave tonight,” frontman Al Huckabee croons over crunchy guitars, his voice filled with hope, mischief and, much like many ‘70s staple tracks, the convincing belief that the night is forever young.
