Songwriter Andrew Savage describes the title track from Parquet Courts’ Human Performance as being about how his “flawed performance” as a human impacts those around him. In the video for “Human Performance”, Savage and his band have failed so hard at humanity that they’re actually puppets. The clip was directed and puppeteered by English Turner Prize nominee Phil Collins and features the entire band as foam-cut facsimiles.
“I was thinking about the track and how it paints a breakup both elliptically and with such devastating directness,” Collins said in a press release. “And I wondered what it would be like if this drama was enacted not through naturalism or authenticity but through its partners in crime, doubling and artificiality. So puppets seemed an obvious choice.”
Parquet Courts aren’t the only puppets in the video, either. There’s a polyamorous triad of puppet lovers, who alternatively fight and get into some really kinky stuff. It’s not exactly Team America: World Police kind of stuff, but you may want to make sure your boss it out of the room when you click play above.
