Prince’s cause of death was an opioid overdose

Prince died from an opioid overdose, a law enforcement official has confirmed to The Associated Press. Update: An official autopsy lists accident fentanyl overdose as the cause of death.

The legendary musician was found dead on April 21st inside an elevator at his Paisley Park estate. He was 57 years old.

TMZ reported that Prince was treated for a drug overdose a week prior to his death. It was also reported that the musician was supposed to meet with a drug addiction specialist on April 22nd. He was found in possession of opioids at the time of his death.

Local and federal officials subsequently launched a criminal probe, which included the questioning of Doctor Michael Todd Schulenberg, who saw Prince twice in the weeks before his death.

Prince had hip replacement surgery in 2010. According to E! News, he refused a blood transfusion during his surgery because it conflicted with his Jehovah’s Witness beliefs, and used Percocet to cope with the discomfort.
