Rihanna gave her ANTI cut “Desperado” a whole lot of soul and stinging power, especially when the lyrics rolled off her tongue like fearless kiss-offs. In the hands of garage rockers The Kills, who have covered the track this week for SiriusXMU, it takes on a whole new form.

Gone are RiRi’s bite and those rumbling synths, the song stripped to its bare essentials. Still, Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince make it a captivating listen, their lonesome rendition evoking the barren, dusty, and seemingly endless plains of the American West.

Here’s Rihanna’s original for comparison:

Earlier this week, The Kills performed “Heart of a Dog” on Conan in continued support of new album Ash & Ice.
