It seems like just above everyone involved in the new Grateful Dead tribute Day of the Dead is out promoting the album with television appearances. The National, including the record’s curators Aaron and Bryce Dessner, appeared with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy on CBS This Morning late last month, and Courtney Barnett destroyed on Fallon not long after.
Last night, Unknown Mortal Orchestra did their part, taking the stage on Conan to perform their version of “Shakedown Street”. Supported by a trio of backup singers, UMO nailed the slightly modernized 1978 classic, including the soaring finishing solo. With the song’s funky bass line and Ruban Nielson’s particular style of guitar fingering, it’s easy to see why this is a case of the right band covering just the right track. Check out the video of the performance above.
