Sharon Van Etten gorgeously covers the Squidbillies theme song — watch

Adult Swim cartoon Squidbillies turns 10 this year, and to celebrate, indie rock’s premier songwriters have been tapped to cover the show’s theme song. Already we’ve heard Kurt Vile put his folky spin on the tune; Father John Misty also turned in his rendition earlier this month.

Today, Sharon Van Etten has unfurled her take. In much the same vein as her original material, Van Etten’s cover simmers in the shadows, introverted but loaded with feeling. Hers is a distinct sound, like that of your heart or chest slowly filling up, and it makes for a lovely soundtrack when paired with the right visuals. (Remember when her haunting “Serpents” accompanied this closing scene of The Walking Dead? Perfect.)

Above, watch Van Etten record and perform her Squidbillies cover in her Brooklyn studio.

Since releasing last year’s I Don’t Want to Let You Down EP, Van Etten has contributed to The National’s Grateful Dead tribute album, the soundtrack to Amazon’s Gortimer Gibbons kids show, and Little Scream’s latest full-length.
