More than 40 years after arriving in theaters to scare the living hell out of people, 1973’s The Exorcist remains a popular pick for best horror film of all time. Longtime fans of the franchise have had to put up with a mostly dire procession of sequels and spinoffs over the years, but that may be set to change (or not). A trailer for the new FOX television event The Exorcist debuted today ahead of its San Diego Comic-Con panel, and it looks to be a reasonably frightening affair.
Geena Davis stars in the trailer as Angela Rance, a woman convinced that a demon is attempting to take control of her daughter. Davis’ wide-eyed terror is initially met with skepticism by Father Tomas (Alfonso Herrera), a priests who takes the case and eventually finds himself face-to-face with Satan himself.
The end of the trailer confirms that FOX’s The Exorcist will use a piano score that closely resembles the original film’s, which may or may not be sacrilege (maybe we could get the priest’s opinion on that).
The Exorcist will premiere Friday, September 23rd on FOX. Check out the trailer below and brush up on our ranking of Every Horror Movie Sequel From Worst to Best.
