It’s becoming increasingly clear that Beetlejuice 2 is dead in the water, with director Tim Burton and Michael Keaton both admitting that the chances of the sequel ever getting off the ground are dim. So how about a Broadway musical instead? The New York Post reports that one is already in development, with Alex Timbers slated to direct.
Yes, that’s the same Alex Timbers who was recently replaced as the director of Disney’s Broadway musical Frozen, amid rumors that the scope of the production simply overwhelmed him. That’s certainly not a promising sign for Beetlejuice on Broadway, but Timbers does have a track record of thinking outside the box. He collaborated with David Byrne and Fatboy Slim for 2013’s Here Lies Love, and he’s currently working alongside Byrne to on a new musical about Joan of Arc entitled Saint Joan.
Beetlejuice: The Musical is set for Broadway’s 2018-2019 season. It may not be exactly what fans were looking for, but look on the bright side: At least we’re being spared another shitty sequel.
