Andrew Bird and The National’s Matt Berninger duet in a living room, cover Lou Reed — watch

on August 25, 2016, 5:55pm

This summer, Andrew Bird launched a streaming performance series Live from the Great Room. Each episode sees the master whistler invite a special megastar guest into his own living room for a barefooted, intimate duet. Jim James came through last month, and this week’s installment features Matt Berninger of The National and EL VY.

The pair performed four songs over the course of their loose and cozy 30-minute session. They opened with a violin-strummed take on “Pink Rabbits” from The National’s Trouble Will Find Me — though Bird didn’t think to ask what a Pink Rabbit actually is till much later on. (Spoiler: Berninger made it up.) They also tackled two Bird originals in “Heretics” off Armchair Apocrypha and the Are You Serious duet “Left Handed Kisses”, during which Berninger took the part of Fiona Apple. They closed with a cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”.

They also discussed the dynamic of being in The National considering Berninger can’t play any instruments, the inspiration for “Heretics”, and visiting medieval torture museums. Watch the whole thing below.

Update: Bird has shared a pro-shot video of his and Berninger’s performance of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”.
