It’s been eight years since Barry Jenkins wowed audiences with his breakthrough indie drama, Medicine for Melancholy. Now, the young filmmaker has returned with what appears to be another whopper of a picture called Moonlight.
Based on a play by Tarell McCraney, Moonlight follows Chiron, a young man who grows up during the riotous era in Miami. Set across three different time periods, Chiron battles a deteriorating home life and wrestles with his dawning sexuality.
Jenkins pieced together an intriguing cast, specifically Naomie Harris, André Holland, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe, Alex R. Hibbert, Jaden Piner, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes, and Jharrel Jerome.
The first trailer above offers a breathtaking sneak peek at the gripping story and showcases Jenkins’ vivid yet naturalistic tendencies as a filmmaker. Odds are this one’s going to make the rounds come awards season.
First it’s gotta hit the critics and that all goes down next month at the Toronto International Film Festival and shortly after at the New York Film Festival. A limited release will follow on October 21st via the almighty A24.
