When he’s not playing guitar in My Morning Jacket, Carl Broemel lives life in the slow lane. It’s the one place where he can stop to admire the kinds of things that rock bands don’t often get to write songs about — seagulls gliding overhead, trees swaying in the wind, clouds rolling gently over the ocean. Listening to Broemel’s new solo album 4th of July, it’s clear that he’s using music as a pathway toward a deeper, more serene understanding of the world and his place in it. These songs won’t make you want to headbang, but they will make you take a closer look at what’s actually going on inside your head.

This is especially true for the chilled-out single “Sleepy Lagoon” and its accompanying music video, which actually contains all of the aforementioned examples of nature in its most peaceful, glorious state. When Broemel approached his good friend and video artist Eric Hopper to direct the video, he knew exactly what he wanted to convey. “I asked him to create a piece that included the sights of a weary traveller mixed with a natural peaceful place,” Broemel explains. Hopper went on to juxtapose footage from the Indianapolis airport with images captured on Lopez Island, a small island in the Pacific Northwest.

“I was energized the first time I went to Lopez,” says Hopper. “I started taking pictures and shooting video the first moment I got on the ferry boat… In fact, almost all of the footage I used for the ‘Sleepy Lagoon’ video was already shot before Carl asked me to do the video.”

Check out the video for “Sleepy Lagoon” below. 4th of July is out now on Broemel’s own Stocks in Asia Records. Get it and be chill.
