Last weekend, LA-based musician and producer Flying Lotus debuted his first short film, Royal, at the Sundance NEXT Fest at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in LA. He came prepared, too. As Pitchfork notes, everyone in the audience got a customized barf bag emblazoned with the movie’s title (it’s unclear if anybody actually had to use theirs, but let’s hope not). As FlyLo revealed on Twitter today, Royal is just a small part of a much more ambitious feature film and album concept entitled Kuso.
“[I’ve] been steady filming low key this year with some talented folks,” FlyLo explained while detailing his plans for Kuso. Some of those talented folks are fellow musicians, as a subsequent tweet revealed that the film will feature new music from Captain Murphy (his rapper alter-ego), Aphex Twin, Thundercat, and Akira Yamoaka. One person who won’t be involved is Dave Chappelle, whose agent apparently balked at the film’s content.
Though the film apparently doesn’t have any financial support, FlyLo claims that it’s “65% finished, [and] the music is ‘getting there’ as well.” He also tweeted that he’s actively looking for help. Filmmakers in LA can reply to @BRAINFEEDER with links to their work and reels, and maybe they’ll be able to be a part of Kuso.
As for what the film will be about, FlyLo’s answer is simple (and simply terrifying): “It’s pretty much everything I’m afraid of.” Scroll down to read some highlights from the artist’s tweet storm and check out the teaser for Royal.
