Morrissey on reuniting with The Smiths’ Johnny Marr: “[It] doesn’t make sense any more”

on August 04, 2016, 5:25pm

Fans and bookers have been hounding Morrissey for years to reunite The Smiths. Coachella once even offered to go completely vegan for the notoriously anti-meat artist if he’d just get back with Johnny Marr under the moniker. Moz has turned down every possible offer — and at this point, he just doesn’t even see the point of being asked.

“It’s no longer a question of time or wounds,” he told News.com.au about mending bridges with Marr, “but simply that the issue is now so remote that the question doesn’t make sense any more.”

Whether he thinks that people just aren’t interested in The Smiths anymore (like apparently UK labels aren’t interested in him) or if looking that deep into the past is pointless, it seems like Morrissey is done even thinking about a reunion. Then again, he flipped his stance on performing at Riot Fest within four days, so who knows if this is the final word on the matter.

Elsewhere in the interview, Morrissey also revealed that there’s one last piece of recorded material in the Smiths’ vault. Whether it ever gets released is a different story. “Only a cover of Elvis Presley’s ‘A Fool Such As I’. I don’t even have a copy of it, but I expect it will spring out one day … when I’m on a life-support machine.”

Which is also when The Smiths will reunite, incidentally.
