Omar Rodríguez-López covers Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” — listen

on August 12, 2016, 1:05pm

Omar Rodríguez-López today released the latest of his promised 12 new albums due out before the year’s end. Entitled Blind Worms, Pious Swine, the 11-track record features one song of particular note: a cover of Ellie Goulding’s 2011 sleeper hit, “Lights”.

Rodríguez-López finds the blues in the pop track, turning it into a dirge-y grinder of distorted overlays and creeping bass. The cover may not drive people to the dance floor like the original did, but it masterfully finds the darkness that was always writhing underneath those synth notes. Take a listen to a completely different version of “Lights” below.
