Ronnie James Dio hologram debuts at Germany’s Wacken Open Air Festival

on August 07, 2016, 1:25pm

Ronnie James Dio rose from the dead — in hologram form — at Germany’s Wacken Open Air Music Festival on Saturday night.

The heavy metal pioneer passed away in 2010 following a battle with stomach cancer. Yet, last night, he was back on stage with his former bandmates.

The hologram, designed by Eyellusion, performed Dio’s “We Rock” with Dio Disciples, a band featuring members of the Dio band. It’s the first time a live rock band has performed with a hologram.

The hologram utilized a live recording of Dio’s isolated vocal tracks along with thousands of photos and videos of the singer. “I cried the first time I saw it,” Dio’s wife, Wendy, told Rolling Stone. “It was quite, quite scary. Our crew, when they first saw it at rehearsal, they were in tears. It’s absolutely amazing.”

Wendy, who oversees her late husband’s legacy, intends to tour the hologram in 2017.
