What if the world was populated by bears instead of people? Regina Spektor imagined such a scenario in her new video for “Small Bill$”, and what she found wasn’t any more encouraging.
Things get a little kooky after Spektor rides a cartoon bear into a village of nesting dolls and goes subterranean to hang out with mermaids. Eventually the mermaids destroy the gritty bear metropolis by pulling it into the ocean with the help of trained whales. Not a word of that is made up, we swear. The interesting animation style and insertion of Spektor into the madness makes for an intriguing watch regardless of whether or not we know what we’re looking at. Check it out up top.
“Bill$” comes from Regina’s equally unconventional and excellent album Remember Us To Life. The album serves as a bit of a return to the off-kilter sounds that made Spektor a star, while never losing the sheen of the pop tricks that she’s learned in the meanwhile. It’s a perfect blend of oddity and slickness like…well, dropping major label money on an animated fight between mermaids and bears.
