Chicago producer Joseph Sepka first made a name for himself in the hip-hop community, lending his talents to tracks by Windy City rappers Towkio and SHOWYOUSUCK. But Sepka is on a totally different track with his solo project Walkingshoe, favoring bright indie-folk melodies that recall some of the best radio rock of the early aughts, from Phoenix to Modest Mouse. His new single “Can’t Sleep” is a tightly crafted, high-energy ode to the familiar feeling of staying up all night thinking about a crush.
“I wrote ‘Can’t Sleep’ quite a while ago, and have tried to record it one or two times now without much success,” Sepka tells Consequence of Sound. “ But one late night in the studio, I ended up cutting this particular version and instantly knew it was the one.” If you like your indie pop bubbly and find yourself in the midst of a sleepless night, this one’s a hell of a lot more fun than counting sheep.
“Can’t Sleep” will appear on Walkingshoe’s forthcoming EP Hennie & Me. Check it out below.
