on October 28, 2016, 1:08am

On November 4th, Common will release his new studio album, Black America Again. He got a chance to preview the album with an appearance onThe Tonight Show.

The Chicago rapper-poet performed the album’s politically charged title track with accompaniment from The Roots and BJ the Chicago Kid (Stevie Wonder appears on the album version). Similar to the track’s video, Thursday’s performance featured in-your-face closeups of Common as he rapped about Trayvon Martin, wage disparities, Black Lives Matter, and a failed prison system Towards the end, he pulled down his hoodie and longingly stared into the camera, simultaneously conveying the emotions of worry, sadness, and ultimately, strength. Replay the powerful performance above.
