Here’s another blow to Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment: Rick Famuyiwa is no longer directing The Flash.
“When I was approached by Warner Bros and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day. I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor, and heart.
While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical, and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Brothers, DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”
Famuyiwa was the second director attached to The Flash, following Seth Grahame-Smith, who left just seven months ago. Considering how quickly they handled Grahame-Smith’s departure, the film could conceivably stay right on pace for its March 16th, 2018 release, especially since it’s already in pre-production. Still, it’s yet another hiccup in the rocky DC Universe, which also saw Michelle MacLaren vacate the director’s chair for Wonder Woman and weather rumors of James Wan wanting to leave Aquaman.
In addition to Miller as Barry Allen, The Flash stars Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Billy Crudup as Allen’s father, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. After a (arguably strained) cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Flash is next set to appear in Zach Snyder’s first Justice League film, due out November 17th, 2017.
