It’s sad that Hugh Jackman will finally hang up the blades next year with James Mangold’s Logan, but man oh man does this look like one hell of a closer. Fueled by Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” — which is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek choice given that Mangold directed Walk the Line — the first trailer for the third and final and R-rated Wolverine spinoff finds our X-Men hero old, beaten down, and lost amid a changed world. Watch above.
While details on the film’s plot have been closely guarded, IMDb offers the following synopsis:
“Set in the future of 2024, Logan and Professor Charles Xavier must cope with the loss of the X-Men when a corporation lead by Nathaniel Essex is destroying the world leaving it to destruction, with Logan’s healing abilities slowly fading away and Xavier’s Alzheimer’s forcing him to forget. Logan must defeat Nathaniel Essex with the help of a young girl named Laura Kinney, a female clone of Wolverine.”
(It should be noted that although he was teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, Essex, aka Mr. Sinister, has not been confirmed to appear in Logan. The only confirmed villains so far are Boyd Holbrook’s Donald Pierce and Richard E. Grant’s Dr. Zander Rice.)
Logan opens March 3rd, 2017. Patrick Stewart also reprises his role as Charles Xavier, joining a supporting cast that includes Holbrook, Grant, Doris Morgado, Stephan Merchant, and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
