Just over a decade since his passing in 2005, legendary stand-up comedian Richard Pryor will be getting the biopic treatment. As Variety reports, Lee Daniels has committed to directing the project, which is currently titled Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said. Jay Z has also signed on to produce alongside The Weinstein Company.
Harvey Weinstein confirmed Thursday that the project is fully back on track after a postponement due to scheduling conflicts with Daniels’ Fox TV show Empire. Daniels previously worked with The Weinstein Company on his 2013 film The Butler, while Jay Z will be teaming up with the company again on a forthcoming docuseries about the Rikers Island inmate Kalief Browder.
The cast of Is It Something I Said has been locked in for quite a while now, with Mike Epps set to portray the titular comic. Eddie Murphy will play his father Leroy “Buck Carter” Pryor, while Oprah will portray his grandmother, who ran a brothel and raised him. Kate Hudson has been cast to play Pryor’s wife, Jennifer Lee.
A start date for production on the film is now set for early 2017.
