Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner is eyeing a return to television.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weiner has linked up with Amazon for an eight-episode original series. Not much is known about the project, but Weiner’s latest is said be a contemporary anthology series set in multiple locations across the globe. Weiner will be credited as the series’ creator, writer, and executive producer. He’s also expected to direct a handful of the episodes.
Amazon reportedly paid a pretty penny for the rights to screen the series; the figure quoted by THR is a healthy $70 million. The series will be co-financed by Amazon and The Weinstein Co.
Weiner’s choice of Amazon might have to do with their traditional rollout strategy. Where Netflix likes to drop entire seasons all at one time, Amazon tends to release their shows in a more traditional week-by-week manner. “I would try to convince them to let me roll them out so at least there was just some shared experience. I love the waiting; I love the marination,” he said of the new release model last year.
A release date has not yet been set.
