Alongside Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker and Mark Ronson, Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme assisted in the creation of Lady Gaga’s new single “Perfect Illusion”. Specifically, he plays guitar on the track.
The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney was asked to review “Perfect Illusion” as part of a segment for VICE News Tonight. His biggest critique? “I’m lost because the guitar at the top of it sounds so shitty. It’s like ‘Eye Of The Tiger’, but not even nearly as good as that. It sounds like Hulk Hogan is playing the fucking guitar.”
It’s entirely possible Carney was unaware of Homme’s contributions to the track; it’s also true that he’s never been one to bite his tongue. Carney previously feuded with Jack White, to the point where the two almost got into a fist fight. He’s also had choice words for Spotify, Insane Clown Posse, Justin Bieber, and L.A. Reid over the years.
Update: Both Ronson and Gaga have responded to Carney’s comments. “I also remember my good friend @PatrickCarney sitting in my living room, hearing ‘Uptown Funk’ and telling me it wouldn’t work,” Ronson tweeted. While Gaga added, “He’s not as snarky as I would be watching him in a guitar death-match w Kevin Parker and Josh F☠️cking Homme.”
Update: Carney has responded to Ronson and Gaga, tweeting, “To be clear … I just said the guitar at the top sounds like Hogan™. Lighten up and listen up.” He then tweeted an old video of him playing guitar.
