There’s nothing wrong with taking a song and covering it as faithfully as possible, but it’s perhaps even more impressive if you can really make that track your own. That’s exactly what PUP did with their version of Phantogram’s “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore”.
Performed for Triple J’s Like a Version, the Toronto punks took the New York electronica outfit’s and found a way to mold it into their own sound without making it unrecognizable. The melody is still familiar under all the heavy tones, it’s just a lot more sinister than poppy. PUP don’t go as far as to make it a true punk thrasher, but their ability to find the threads in the original that play best to their strengths and follow them without unraveling the whole essence of the song is a testament to their skills. We might just have to revisit this one when it comes time to pick our favorite cover songs of the year.
