As goofy lower-tier franchises go, Resident Evil has proven incredibly prosperous. Not only has there been six installments, but every single one has broken the $100 million mark worldwide. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. At least until two or three years have gone by in observance. Then, it’s time for the soft reboot.
But we won’t get too far ahead of the inevitable here. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter has a new, full trailer coming out of the New York Comic Con, starting today, and it’s every bit as delightfully excessive as the film’s earlier, “Paradise City”-fueled teaser. (This time around, the song is remixed to…arguably lesser returns.) Milla Jovovich returns once more as Alice, the embattled post-apocalyptic hero at the film’s center, as The Final Chapter evidently does its best to hit on every familiar locale and character the franchise has left untapped at this point.
The Final Chapter will hit theaters on January 27th, a month boasting the holy “how are there so many of these?” trinity of an Underworld sequel and Vin Diesel’s return to the xXx series in addition to this, Paul W.S. Anderson’s farewell to a 14-year endeavor.
If you’re just coming around to the series now, here’s the official synopsis:
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began — Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
