On October 21st, Leonard Cohen — at 82 years of age — will release a new album called You Want It Darker via Sony Records. In anticipation, the LP is streaming in its entirety below courtesy of NPR.com.
You Want It Darker serves as Cohen’s 14th (!) full-length to date and 2014’s Popular Problems. It collects nine new songs, including the title track, which premiered earlier this year during an episode of Netflix series Peaky Blinders.
Produced by his son, Adam Cohen, the LP is being described by those close to the legendary songwriter as a “masterpiece” and “classic Cohen.” It may very well also be his last. In a recent profile in the New Yorker, the elder Cohen talked about how he’d come to terms with his mortality and cast doubt on whether he’d be able to put out a follow-up to You Want It Darker.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to finish those songs,” he reflected. “Maybe, who knows? And maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know. But I don’t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don’t dare do that. I’ve got some work to do. Take care of business. I am ready to die.”
Update: Cohen has passed away, less than a month after the release of You Want It Darker.
