Weird things happen in Austin, man. Like Walker Lukens running into Jim Eno at a bar and then going on to produce an entire album’s worth of songs with the Spoon drummer. One of those songs comes your way today in the shape of “The Touch”, and it’s a prime example of why Lukens is beginning to stand out in a town full of musicians trying to make a name for themselves. The singer-songwriter’s voice strikes the perfect balance between soul and sass, riding high above a funky bassline that definitely owes a bit to Spoon’s influence.

“It took a long time to get the lyrics for this song,” Lukens tells Consequence of Sound. “At one point, it was in the past tense with a couple extra verses and no chorus. My poor band. I made them play this riff for weeks. I spent hours walking around Austin listening to an instrumental demo of this track and writing lyrics. I wanted to capture that feeling when you are so infatuated with someone that you think the world depends on it.”

The song, which you can listen to below, appears on Lukens’ forthcoming Never Understood EP, out October 14th via Modern Outsider. The record was produced by Eno at his Public Hi-Fi studio in Austin and recorded with Lukens’ longtime backing band, The Side Arms.
