It’s not completely unprecedented for a pop star to appear at the annual Country Music Association Awards. In fact, it’s becoming something of a trend; last year, Justin Timberlake joined Chris Stapleton for a well-received performance, and this evening’s ceremony saw Beyoncé take the stage.
Queen Bey’s appearance, announced just hours before the CMAs were scheduled to begin, wasn’t as readily received by country fans as Timberlake’s was, however. People on social media were preemptively shaming the event organizers for what they assumed would be a half-naked, anti-police performance somewhere between a sex show and a protest.
Well, Beyoncé put all those “concerns” to rest when the curtain came up to reveal the singer in a gorgeous dress flanked by none other than the Dixie Chicks. Backed by a big band filled with horns and a killer harmonica player, Bey and the Dixies performed the country-influenced Lemonade track “Daddy Lessons”. With the ladies trading verses and a solid fiddle solo, the performance certainly shut up any detractors. Check out video below, along with studio version of the collaboration released shortly following performance.
