Lin-Manuel Miranda was a guest on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast this week, and like every conversation on the show, there were many fascinating topics discussed. The Hamilton creator talked about growing up in Latino New York, his father’s incredible political work, and what drove him to get into musicals. But as he dove into that last bit of his life, he revealed a bizarre biographical tidbit that hip-hop heads will find oddly interesting: Miranda was bullied in high school by Immortal Technique.
Technique has become one of the most politically vocal rappers of his era (making him someone to keep an eye on over the next four years; on Election Day, he even hinted at a new album for 2017), but back in high school, he was just an angry kid named Felipe Coronel. “He was our school bully. He terrorized kids, he’d throw them in the garbage,” Miranda told Maron. “I got thrown in the garbage by him.”
Miranda noted that Coronel has built an “amazing life for himself” as Immortal Technique, but he still remembers his bullying days. “He was a really angry kid, and it’s been wonderful to watch him grow up and find a political outlet for that anger,” the Broadway star said. “But he was just Felipe and he scared the shit out of us! But he was in the school play; he got a part the senior year and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m in a fucking play with the dude that scares the shit out of all my friends!’”
You know, considering the current political climate and Miranda’s newfound notoriety, these two guys might want to get back in touch and burry the hatchet for the greater good. Listen to the Miranda’s full episode of WTF here.
