Damien Chazelle captured Oscar gold in 2014 with Whiplash. Now, he’s set to return with another music-focused film, albeit one with a much different tone. Yes, J.K. Simmons stars in the forthcoming La La Land, but instead of berating Miles Teller, he owns a jazz club employing Ryan Gosling. His character is still a bit of a jerk, but his decision to fire Gosling on Christmas sets up the plot for the film. What follows is a romantic comedy-meets-musical, in which Gosling and Emma Stone (who plays an aspiring actress) fall in love, pursue their dreams, and do a bit of singing and dancing along the way. Also John Legend shows up.
After premiering at the Venice Film Festival back in August and at TIFF one month later, La La Land is set to receive a wide release on December 9th. In anticipation, the first trailer for the film has been unveiled. Watch it above.
