On November 18th, The Edge of Seventeen hits theaters while its official soundtrack simultaneously becomes available at retailers everywhere. In addition to an eclectic collection of tracks from the likes of Anderson .Paak featuring ScHoolboy Q, Miike Snow, The 1975, and Aimee Mann, the OST features a few brand new songs, including The Struts‘ cover of the classic Sweet smash “Ballroom Blitz”.
It’s not hard to trace the lineage from Sweet to The Struts, so the choice of cover is perfectly fitting. The band does an impeccable job recreating the original’s brash, dynamic energy, but it’s vocalist Luke Spiller’s delirious delivery of the memorable lyrics that really sells the whole package.
“We had a great time recording this timeless track,” the band tells Consequence of Sound. “Recorded in one day in New York City, we really wanted to apply our own raw style to it. We think it sounds great and we really captured the essence of the song. Hope everyone enjoys it as much as we loved recording it.”
You certainly don’t have to be a confused teen on the brink of finding themselves to relish the scruffy joy of the track, so take a listen below.
Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, The Edge of Seventeen is a coming-of-age dramedy starring Hailee Steinfeld, Haley Lu Richardson, Hayden Szeto, Blake Jenner, Woody Harrelson, and Kyra Sedgwick. In the film, Steinfeld plays a high school junior whose life is “already awkward when her all-star older brother Darian (Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Richardson). Nadine now feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship with an awkward thoughtful boy (Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things might not be so terrible after all.” Sounds fun.
