As far as love stories go, the one about how Tony Bennett met his wife Susan Benedetto isn’t exactly what you would call heartwarming. Try creepy.
Large age gaps between spouses are nothing new, especially in Hollywood, but the veteran singer might have taken it a little too far. In his new memoir, Just Getting Started (out today), he recounts the time when he first had the pleasure of meeting Benedetto. It was 1966, and a 40-year-old Bennett was backstage at one of his concerts with two fans, Marion and Dayl Crow. Benedetto was also present … inside mother Marion’s womb. Indeed, Benedetto had not yet been born into this world.
Bennett and Benedetto’s parents all posed for a photo that evening, a picture which to this day, still makes the 19-time Grammy winner chuckle. “As fate would have it, Marion was pregnant at the time with … Susan!” Bennett wrote (via People). “It’s a photo we all laugh about, knowing the incredible turn of events that followed.” Some two decades later, Bennett and Benedetto properly met, face to face as adults, fell in love, and proceeded to date before finally tying the knot in 2007.
Personally, I don’t know that delight would be my reaction to such “a turn of events”; I also probably wouldn’t lovingly highlight it in my autobiography. #Justsaying.
