Christopher Nolan’s films have largely been fantastical, from The Dark Knight trilogy to Interstellar. His latest feature, however, focuses on a real-life tale from World War II. In the epic drama Dunkirk, Nolan tells the story of a group of Allied soldiers trapped on a beach with enemies before them and the sea behind them.
The film stars Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, and James D’Arcy. It also marks the big screen acting debut of One Direction’s Harry Styles. Nolan shot the movie on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film stock. He also reconditioned actual warships for the shoot, including the French Navy destroyer Maillé-Brézé, and reportedly spent $5 million on a vintage aircraft which he destroyed during shooting.
Dunkirk hits theaters on July 21st, 2017.
