If you feel like you might’ve heard about Julie Ducournau’s upcoming film Raw already, you probably have. After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival last May, where it won the FIPRESCI Critics’ Prize, Ducournau’s feature debut made news at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall when it apparently caused several audience members to pass out during the screening.
Given the premise, the fainting’s not entirely surprising. The film’s official description is as follows: “Everyone in Justine’s family is a vet. And a vegetarian. At sixteen she’s a brilliant student starting out at veterinary school where she experiences a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her family principles and eats raw meat for the first time. Justine will soon face the terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge.”
And once you take a look at the film’s first trailer, it’s pretty clear that Justine (Garance Marillier) will find that her true self happens to have a taste for raw meat, in all its forms. We’ll let you put two and two together on where Raw will head from there, but much of the film’s acclaim has come as much from the coming-of-age parable it offers as the “you’ve gotta see this” nastiness on hand. Ducournau’s film looks to hit that sweet spot between greatness and grotesquerie, and we can’t wait. If you’re feeling up to it, see what you think of Raw before it sinks its teeth into theaters on March 17th.
