Billy Joel performs “Miami 2017”, ranks his favorite Billy Joel songs for Colbert — watch

on January 10, 2017, 9:55am

Over the next few months, Billy Joel will play shows beyond the friendly confines of Madison Square Garden. The Piano Man recently announced a run of dates at prominent baseball stadiums, including Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Progressive Field in Cleveland, Wrigley Field in Chicago, Boston’s Fenway Park, and Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

With tickets set to go on sale later this week, Joel drummed up excited on last night’s episode of Late Show with Stephen Colbert. After the CBS host went all fan boy and introduced Joel by singing an impressive medley of song titles, the two spoke at length about the musician’s formative years (including sneaking into a Jimi Hendrix concert), his ongoing residency at MSG, and building motorcycles for Bruce Springsteen. Colbert also asked Joel to rank his five favorite “Billy Joel songs” (if you recall, Springsteen did something similar when he appeared on Colbert a few months back). His answer? “Vienna”, “And So It Goes”, “You May Be Right”, “She’s Right On Time”, and “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” in that order.

Later in the episode, Joel hit the stage to perform “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out On)”, a song which he recently performed in the city of Miami as the clock struck midnight on 2017. It’s also a song that may pull us through Donald Trump’s presidency.
