DC Films announces team of writers, heroes for Green Lantern Corps

on January 12, 2017, 3:13pm

With all the hubbub around DC Films’ upcoming Wonder Woman and Justice League films, one hero has gotten lost in the shuffle. Not much has been said about the planned Green Lantern Corps. movie since it was announced way back in July 2015. Now, movement has finally begun on the film, as DC and Warner Bros. have announced a pair of writers and revealed some new details.

Penning the script for the 2020 blockbuster will be David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes. For better or worse, Goyer is very familiar to fans of comic book movies; he wrote the Blade trilogy, Batman Begins, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeThough a few of those movies were hits, it doesn’t exactly paint a steady track record, but WB and DC have always shown faith in Goyer’s talents. They’ve paired him with Rhodes, a relative newcomer whose works include Contract Killers and Grassroots.

In addition to announcing the writing team, DC Films revealed which characters would be the focus of the Corps. There’s a wealth of human Lanterns to choose from in the comics, but the film will zero in on two of the most well-known: Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart. Jordan, a cocky air force pilot, was previously portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the oft-mocked and non-canonical 2011 Green Lantern; Armie Hammer has long been rumored to take over the role. Jon Stewart, meanwhile, is a disciplined Marine, with Idris Elba and Tyrese Gibson often mentioned as casting possibilities.

Green Lantern Corps. is being described as “Lethal Weapon in space,” and the dichotomous personalities of Jordan and Stewart would lend themselves well to that premise. It’s unknown if a Lantern might appear in one of the DC Films productions coming out between now and 2020, but don’t be too surprised if someone green and glowing shows up in Justice League when it opens November 17th.
