In our review of last year’s psychological thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, we warned audiences to “Forget any relationship to [the 2008 found-footage sci-fi film] Cloverfield. 10 Cloverfield Lane is its own movie, and any connection to that other, more ostentatious Bad Robot joint is best seen as one more fun piece inside the mystery box, if not a red herring.”
All of that is still true, and both Cloverfield films stand tall on their own merits. But fans still searching for a connection between the original and its “spiritual sequel” will want to check out a mind-blowing new fan theory from YouTube channel Inside A Mind.
Originally picked up by the horror site Bloody Disgusting, the nearly 20-minute video, which you can view above, dives into the laughably complex A.R.G. (Alternate Reality Game) that producer J.J. Abrams and his team have built around the two films. By breaking down individual elements of this A.R.G. and making his own inferences, Inside A Mind may have stumbled upon the real story that connects the two Cloverfield films within the same cinematic universe. We won’t provide any spoilers here, but suffice it to say that Abrams has crafted quite the rabbit hole for his most dedicated fans to explore at lengths.
