Julia Jacklin covers The Strokes’ “Someday” as an alt-country ballad — watch

on January 20, 2017, 9:54am

The Strokes’ “Someday” is a punchy bit of early garage rock revivalism, a gem of a tune even 15 years after its release. It’s easily one of the catchiest alternative singles ever released, but in the hands of Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin, it becomes something else entirely.

Jacklin tackled the Is This It track for Triple J’s Like A Version, and her take gorgeously flips the song on its head. Instead of a jangly rock number, it becomes an almost tropical alt-country ballad. Slowed down to a luxurious crawl, Jacklin’s version is more than a full minute longer than the original, but the stretch is very much worth. A lilting guitar gives the classic chord progression a beachy vibe while Jacklin’s gentle warble makes the lyrics nearly heartbreaking. Check out what quite possibly is one of the best Like A Version covers ever via the video above.

Jacklin will be back in North America in April supporting her Don’t Let the Kids Win debut. Find her complete itinerary below.
